Answers to the questions homeowners ask us most about VELUX skylights.
A properly installed modern skylight shouldn't leak. Most leaks come from poor flashing or installation. Every skylight Viking Exteriors installs includes a genuine VELUX flashing kit, installed to VELUX's specifications.
VELUX deck-mounted and curb-mounted skylights come with a 10-year "No Leak" installation warranty that covers leaks when the skylight and VELUX flashing are installed correctly. Because every skylight we install includes VELUX flashing, every one qualifies. VELUX also covers the glass for 20 years, the product for 10 years, and shades and controls for 5 years, and our own 5-year workmanship guarantee comes on top of that.
Most VELUX skylights are sold as a complete Skylight System, which includes the glass skylight, a pre-installed, solar-powered, room-darkening white shade, and a pre-programmed remote for the shade. Fresh Air venting systems also include a remote to open and close the skylight. Other shade colors and light-filtering styles are available by special order.
Usually, yes. If your skylights are more than about 15 to 20 years old, replacing them with the roof is easier and less costly than going back later, because the flashing is already exposed and the new roofing ties in cleanly.
Most skylight replacements in an existing opening are completed in one day. New installations take longer if the ceiling needs to be opened, framed and finished. We'll give you a timeline with your estimate.
A skylight is a window in the roof that gives you a view of the sky and plenty of light, and some open for ventilation. A sun tunnel uses a reflective tube to bring daylight into smaller spaces, like hallways and closets, where a full skylight won't fit.
Yes. VELUX makes skylights designed for flat and low-slope roofs. We'll recommend the right model for your roof during the estimate.
Most VELUX skylight installations we do run about $1,000 to $1,600, depending on the size of the skylight and whether it's installed as part of a new roof or as a standalone project. Installing skylights with a roof replacement is usually the more economical option, since the roof is already open. We'll give you an exact price with your free estimate.
